URAMASA®
青樓十二時 續・卯ノ刻.png__PID:3586581b-2de8-4905-9c82-908cd7bcfc5b

「青楼十二時 卯の刻」 喜多川歌麿喜(1753?-1806) Kitagawa Utamaro's "Twelve Hours in the Yoshiwara: The Hour of the Hare" depicts a courtesan seeing off an overnight guest at dawn. The lining of the haori she is about to drape over the guest features an illustration of a Daruma figure, sucking on his finger with a slightly unsatisfied expression.

During the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune (1716–1745), the Edo shogunate implemented the Kyōhō Reforms, a series of economic policies aimed at addressing the government's financial difficulties. As part of these reforms, strict sumptuary laws were enacted to curb excessive luxury. These regulations sought to reduce the shogunate's expenditures while also restraining the extravagant spending habits of both merchants and samurai. Yoshimune promoted simplicity and frugality, rigorously enforcing restrictions on ornate kimonos and lavish accessories. It was within this context that the culture of "Uramasari" emerged—a sophisticated aesthetic in which people restrained outward displays of luxury but indulged in hidden elegance. Instead of showcasing their wealth openly, they paid great attention to unseen details, secretly enjoying beauty in places others could not immediately see. From the linings of kimono and haori jackets to the backs of obi sashes and even the intricate engravings on sword guards, individuals expressed their sense of style, personality, and refinement through concealed elements. The spirit of "Uramasari" was not merely an artistic approach; it carried an underlying defiance against authority. In a society where visible extravagance was heavily regulated, people found a way to subvert these restrictions through discreet sophistication. By wearing muted tones on the surface while hiding luxurious crimson silk or intricate gold brocade in the linings, they challenged the system in a subtle yet elegant way. The philosophy of "true beauty lies within" was deeply embedded in this practice, making it not just a fashion statement, but a reflection of resilience and refined rebellion.
